Snow
January 10, 2021
After the week when we came within seconds and feet of having Pence and Pelosi in zip-tie handcuffs, there was snow here in Austin. More snow than I’ve ever seen in the 35 years I’ve lived here.
Usually there’s barely a sprinkling of it. It lasts an hour or so and is gone, but today it just kept coming, and at one point every twig and leaf had a frosting of snow. What a gift from the heavens.
We needed a cleansing after this week. So much was soiled, defiled, demeaned. But the riot at the Capitol on January 6 also brought clarity. The guillotine on the Capitol lawn was clarifying. So was the video of the cop getting crushed in the door. We saw, live on TV, not just the barbarians at the gate, but breaking it down.
And the distinction between those who want a civilized America and the mob at the Capitol is crystal clear: one wants a civil discussion and the other a white ethnostate. That’s a hell of a bright line.
Snow. Clarity. Gratitude. That’s the big three today.
